i hate to overuse maxims, but "necessity is the mother of invention." if something makes life easier, someone will come up with it. if it makes production faster or cheap, it will be invented. after all, the bow and arrow, the spear thrower, the knife, etc were all invented by people with very small economic communities (maybe a few dozen individuals at most), who simply wanted an easier and more efficient life. not to mention that in a modern society it would be no challenge to support specialized inventors - as a capitalism, we already do, however it is only those inventors who can profit significantly enough from their ideas that are truly specialized. most people who are concerned that a communism will stagnate use the USSR and China in the middle of the 20th century as examples, but these were not true communisms and were to concerned with maintaining the power of their governments to allow new ideas to circulate effectively.
