The strange phenomenon of gamers finding violence against women in video games funny

Gamers sure love to see women being beaten.

This is something that always leaves me scratching my head, I continuously see videos of various games where women are beated up, upvoted and promoted in gaming fora such as reddit’s gaming subreddit. Those videos usually contain nothing more than a short sequence of a video game character beating up women, such as this, and this or this, and yet, the reddit and youtube communities seem to think this is hilarious, as seen by the amount of “likes” and upvotes.

Not only that, but if you see the related videos in Youtube, you’ll find a large collection of videos simply about that. Beating up random women in video games. And this is not only in Deus Ex, oh no. A cursory search will easily turn up videos of beating digital females in Grand Theft Auto, Saint’s Row and the like. It’s like a special kind of humour for misogynists.

For some strange reason, it’s also primarily directed against prostitutes as well, which raises all sorts of secondary questions beside the love of female abuse.

What do you think about this phenomenon?

  1. Hm. So if it would be men beaten randomly up that would be ok?

Psychologically I consider this a quite common phenomenon among young men with dominant mothers seeking subcouncious revenge.

Of course not. It's not an either/or proposition.

It is telling however that it's happening.

  2. To be honest the second link goes to a series of youtube videos where a guy gets “easily offended” by males and females and kills them. You just took one with a female being killed. The third one the guy tried to kill a guy and accidentally kills a female(this would be more understandable if you played the game). Only your first link has to do with your actual assertion. That said video games are often immature, sexist and occasionally racist. But that doesn’t make your post any less of a failure.

    1. Why the beatdown of women was done is not the reason. Why those particular videos became so popular and liked is the question.

      Also, fuck off troll.

  3. I think it stems from the same impulse that makes some people laugh at dead baby/nigger/Jew jokes, which is that they are taboos of the worst kind or just incredibly politically incorrect. Some young men trying to find their identity crave attention and like sticking it up to the establishment, and find that telling women to learn their place gets the "feminazis" most riled up (which makes it so much more fun). It's a countercultural thing, which means us feminists can yap at them all we want and it's unlikely to do a damn thing before feminism becomes embedded within the gamer culture.

Do I think there are unabashed violent misogynists out there who take shelter in this kind of behavior? Of course. I also think most gamers who engage in these kind of jokes don't have any clue about their privilege. But I don't think it's a genuine call for violence against women – simply a bunch of immature guys enjoying their privilege. Whether that breeds violence is possible, but that's too complex a situation for me to analyze.

  4. Men getting hurt is just hilarious in television, especially when a woman inflicts the pain, why's it such a big deal when some people find a situation where a woman gets hurt funny?

By the way I found those videos hilarious, but it'd be just as funny if they were weak little men annoying the superhuman main character of Deus Ex and receiving severely disproportionate retaliation.
