Well, for pain is a good teacher, a changer and and one of the main aspects of everyone's life (even yours - in this case, avoidance) I think a lifelong goal of avoiding pain is ridiculous to me. It seems a sheepish existance. And not really challenging in my point of view. Call me a masochist on that but I appreciate the pain I feel. I do not seek it but I do not avoid it. And avoiding it is neither brave, nor wise, nor effective to me.

And his absence declarated as desired status seems quite static to me.

On the contrary. The striving for reaching absence of pain or "hedony" as Epicurus called it, is a life-spanning goal.

Until then, let me just say, that I am talking about the absence of pain in the Epicurean sense.

I thought so.

Though pain - as I would describe it - in its countless forms is not to be reduced as term to this meaning only. And his absence declarated as desired status seems quite static to me.

I will agree that solely biological functioning is not a full human life but it is the definition of life nonetheless.

The absence of pain as an ultimate value is something I need to go into depth in order to explain it better so I need to write an article on it soon.
Until then, let me just say, that I am talking about the absence of pain in the Epicurean sense.

Well, quite interesting, but it is strange how general considerations can be made from the own point of view. I always considered pain as a factor of life, learning and joy. If you skin it to the bone, pain to me is in a way desirable and valuable thing. And solely biological functioning is not yet life. So it is interesting all the way though I suppose I have to take myself out of the equation one more time. ;)
