Πριν από λίγους μήνες είχα κάνει γράψει ένα κείμενο για μια ανησυχητική πρόοδο όσον αφορά το τρόπο που λειτουργεί το internet. Τότε, και στο digg, και στην λίστα LGU ο περισσότερος κόσμος ήταν σκεπτικός για το πόσο κάτι τέτοιο μπορεί να συμβεί και να υλοποιηθεί.

Μετά από μερικές εβδομάδες ησυχίας, τα νέα άρχισαν να έρχονται. Φαίνεται ότι οι εταιρίες πίσω από αυτή την κίνηση όχι απλά δεν αερολογούσαν άλλα ήταν σοβαρές σαν καρδιακό επεισόδιο. Οι πληροφορίες που ερχόντουσαν στα μάτια μου ήταν ανησυχητικές, to say the least. Δεν περνάει πια μέρα που να μην βλέπω κάποια καινούργια εξέλιξη σχετικά με αυτό το θέμα.

Εαν βαριέσαι να διαβάσεις το προηγούμενο κείμενο, περιληπτικά λέω ότι οι Αμερικάνικες εταιρίες που ελέγχουν τις τηλεπικοινωνιακές γραμμές (AT&t, Verizon κλπ) κατάφεραν να ανοίξουν παραθυράκι στο νόμο σύμφωνα με το οποίο, η συνδέσεις broadband δεν εμπίπτουν στην προστασία που παρέχει το Αμερικάνικο σύνταγμα στην ουδετερότητα της επικοινωνίας. Με λίγα λόγια, όσον αφορά την τηλεφωνία, μια εταιρία δεν μπορεί να δώσει μεγαλύτερη προτεραιότητα σε ένα πελάτη της από κάποιον άλλο επειδή την πληρώνει περισσότερο.
Αυτό το παραθυράκι άνοιξε ύπουλα, μέσω του lobby των εταιριών αυτών στο Κογκρέσο και τους έδωσε το πάτημα για να κάνουν το επόμενο βήμα’ να επιχειρήσουν να πολώσουν το internet με σχέδια διαφορετικής χρέωσης.
Με λίγα λόγια, κάποιος μπορεί να πληρώσει τις εταιρίες αυτές ώστε τα δικά του πακέτα να έχουν μεγαλύτερη προτεραιότητα από τα πακέτα κάποιου άλλου και άρα να φθάνουν πιο γρήγορα.

Μαντέψτε ποιοι θα είναι οι χαμένοι της υπόθεσης. Εσύ, εγώ και ο κακομοίρης ο νέος επιχειρηματίας που θα βλέπει την πρωτοπόρα ιδέα του να μην μπορεί να σηκωθεί καν από το έδαφος.
Έχεις να πεις κάτι; Εαν δεν έχεις μερικές χιλιάδες δολάρια να δώσεις τότε λυπάμαι, άλλα η σελίδα σου θα σερβίρεται με ταχύτητα 33k.
Ξεχάστε τα P2P, ξεχάστε τα underground sites, ξεχάστε καινούργιες αλλαγές σαν αυτό που έγινε και γίνεται με τον firefox.
Εφόσον δεν έχεις λεφτά, δεν προβλέπεται…

Αυτό δεν είναι επιστημονική φαντασία παιδιά. Γίνεται ΤΩΡΑ. Και μην νομίζετε ότι επειδή συμβαίνει στις ΗΠΑ, δεν θα επηρεάσει και εμάς, ειδικά εμάς τους Έλληνες που κλασσικά τους παπαγαλίζουμε σε ότι κάνουν. Η μήπως πιστεύετε ότι εάν ο (Π)ΟΤΕ είχε την ευκαιρία να χρησιμοποιήσει το μονοπώλιο του στις γραμμές τηλεπικοινωνίας, δεν θα το έκανε;

Ευτυχώς που υπάρχουν και άτομα που ενεργούν πριν να είναι πολύ αργά. Ήδη οργανώθηκε σελίδα με σκοπό να “Σώσει το Internet”. Αυτοί κατάφεραν ήδη να αφυπνίσουν ορισμένους γερουσιαστές ώστε να αντισταθούν σε αυτό το νομοσχέδιο. Μάλιστα προσπάθησαν να περάσουν και μια προσθήκη στο σύνταγμα  η οποία είχε σκοπό να προστατέψει την “Ουδετερότητα του Διαδικτύου”. Δυστυχώς η ψήφιση της απέτυχε. Ευτυχώς, η διαφορά ψήφων ήταν πολύ μικρή σε σχέση με αυτό που αναμενόταν [1].
Η μάχη χάθηκε λοιπόν άλλα ο πόλεμος συνεχίζεται.

Ευτυχώς δηλαδή που υπάρχει το ουδέτερο διαδίκτυο και μπορούν αυτά τα νέα να διαδίδονται τάχιστα, σε αντίθεση με αυτό που θα θελαν οι υποστηρικτές του νομοσχεδίου, οι οποίοι θα προτιμούσαν να περάσουν τον νόμο σιωπηλά και χωρίς ταραχές. Το ίδιο ακριβώς που προσπαθούν να σταματήσουν, έρχεται και τους δαγκώνει στον κώλο δηλαδή.
Έτσι λοιπόν, μπορούμε να μάθουμε τα “ψεματάκια” που λένε στο Κογκρέσο ορισμένοι γερουσιαστές,και καλά αντικειμενικά, για να δώσουν ευκαιρίες στους μικρούς επιχειρηματίες και άλλα τέτοια ωραία.
Μαντέψτε ποιος είναι οι κυριότερος σπόνσορας προεκλογικής εκστρατείας του εν λόγω κυρίου…

Τι μπορούμε να κάνουμε εμείς τώρα; Τίποτα συγκλονιστικό, αυτή είναι μια μάχη που πρέπει να την δώσουν μόνοι τους οι Αμερικάνοι πολίτες. Μπορούμε όμως να συμπαρασταθούμε βοηθώντας να διαδοθεί αυτό το νέο όσο περισσότερο γίνεται.

Το μόνο που ελπίζω είναι ότι στην περίπτωση που αυτό το σενάριο γίνει πραγματικότητα, στην Ευρώπη δεν θα περάσει (Έχουμε καλό ρεκόρ σ’ αυτά. Βλέπε πατέντες λογισμικού) και σαν αποτέλεσμα, θα ξεπεράσουμε τις ΗΠΑ στην τεχνολογική ανάπτυξη και το επίπεδο γνώσης (αν δεν τις έχουμε ξεπεράσει ήδη στο δεύτερο).

Ο πόλεμος πάντως εντείνεται και, κατά την γνώμη μου, δεν πρέπει να μείνουμε αμέτοχοι. Το δικό μας λιθαράκι μετράει

Η Ελλάδα 10η στην Ευρώπη στην χρήση του Firefox

Για φαντάσου, και μας είχα για πιο οπισθοδρομικούς. Και όμως λοιπόν, οι χρήστες του internet στην Ελλάδα χρησιμοποιούν το firefox σε μεγαλύτερο ποσοστό απο την Αγγλία και την Γαλλία. Ο πιο μεγάλος οπαδός της Πύραλεπούς φαίνεται να είναι η Σλοβενία με ~36% – Σχετικό άρθρο

Απο μια άλλη άποψη, είναι λογικό να έχουμε μεγαλο ποσοστό χρήσης διότι στην Ελλάδα είμαστε ακόμη απίστευτα πίσω όσον αφορά το internet. Σαν αποτέλεσμα, κοιτόντας τον μέσο όρος του επιπέδου τεχνογνωσίας του μέσου όρου απο τους “net-χρήστες” μας, λογικά θα πρέπει να είναι μεγαλύτερος απο άλλες χώρες, πιο ανεπτυγμένες. Εδώ δηλαδή, το internet ακόμα είναι για τους λίγους και καλούς, οι οποίοι συνήθως ψάχνονται και λίγο περισσότερο.

Πάλι όμως, εαν στην Ελλάδα στο internet μπαίνει το 10% και απο αυτό το 10% μόνο το 20% χρησιμοποιεί Firefox, αυτό σημαίνει οτι έχουμε περίπου 216 χιλίαδες χρήστες firefox. Εαν είμασταν κόμμα θα ποιάναμε ένα 3% αμα λάχει 😉

Το τέλος του Internet;

“Οι σχεδιαστές της υποδομής του internet σκέφτονται νέα σχέδια συνδρομών που θα περιορίσουν περισσότερο την δικυακή εμπειρία, εγκαθιστόντας “πλατινένια”, “χρυσα” και “ασημένια” επίπεδα πρόσβασης στο Internet που θα θέσουν όρια στον αριθμό των downloads, media streams η ακόμα και στα μηνύματα e-mail που θα μπορούν να σταλούν ή να παρθούν”

Κάπως έτσι είναι η ελεύθερη μετάφραση ενώς ανησυχητικού νέου που ανακάλυψα καθώς κοίταγα το [tag]digg[/tag].

Το άρθρο είναι άκρως ανησυχητικό διότι προβλέπει ένα σκοτεινό μέλλον για το Internet’ ένα μέλλον όπου η πρόσβαση στα δεδομένα ορίζεται όχι απο το τι θέλεις να δεις εσυ, αλλα απο το ποιός έχει πληρωσεί περισσότερα λεφτά στην εταιρία που σου προμηθέυει την υποδομή.

Αρχικά μου φαινόταν πολύ άποιαστη ιδέα, όταν το είχα διαβάσει τότε το Νοέμβριο. Τα μεγαλομανή σχέδια ενώς υπερπληρωμένου Διευθυντή, αλλα απ’οτι φαίνεται είναι πολύ σοβαροί στα σχέδια τους και πολύ φοβάμαι οτι εαν όντως η Αμερική ξεκινήσει ένα τέτοιο σχέδιο, η υπόλοιπη Ευρώπη δεν θα είναι πολύ πίσω.

Η μόνες μας ελπίδες είναι οι εξής έτσι όπως το βλέπω.

  1. Ο κόσμος να ξυπνήσει γρήγορα και να αντισταθεί σε μια τέτοια κίνηση πριν είναι αργά. Η απάθεια και ο σταρχιδιμός είναι πολύ επικίνδυνες αυτήν την περίοδο μιας και απο την στιγμή που θα μπούν οι “αλυσίδες” θα είναι πολύ δύσκολο να αφαιρεθούν.
    Εαν ο κόσμος δεν δείξει στην κυβέρνηση οτι οι νόμοι δεν βγαίνουν για να συμφέρουν τις μεγαλοεταιρίες αλλα τον ίδιο, οι πληρωμένοι και μισθωμένοι πολιτικοί δεν θα το σκεφτούν καν.
    Δυστυχώς εαν πάρω σαν παράδειγμα την αντιδραστικότητα του μέσου Αμερικάνου (και Έλληνα) τότε βλέπω τα πράγματα λιγο χλωμά.
  2.  Ο υπόλοιπος κόσμος να μην ακολουθήσει το παράδειγμα της Αμερικής. Καλά για την Ελλαδάρα δεν έχω και πολλές ελπίδες αλλα χώρες όπως η Σουηδία, Ινδία και Νότια Κορέα ίσως αποτελέσουν το λαμπρό παράδειγμα. Η Κίνα που ειναι η ανερχόμενη υπερδύναμη δυστυχώς, με τις πολιτικές που έχει θα κάνει κάτι ανάλογο με την ίδια την κυβέρνηση στα ηνεία.
  3. Εαν κλειδωθεί το κλασσικό Internet να δημιουργηθεί ένα εναλακτικό, ένα alternet ας πούμε που θα είναι πραγματικά ελεύθερο. Ίσως κάτι τέτοιο να είναι ήδη εφικτό μέσω, ας πούμε, του Freenet αλλα δεν το βρίσκω πολύ δύσκολο οι νέοι μας “υπερκράτορες” να κλείσουν απλά τις ανάλογες “πόρτες” ωστε να το κάνουν πιο αργό και απο την καθυστέρηση όπως θα κάνουν σίγουρα και με τα P2P δίκτυα.

Αν και εταιρίες σαν το Google και την Amazon αρχικά φαίνεται να αντιστέκονται σε αυτή την κίνηση, δεν νομίζω οτι θα κρατήσει πολύ. Άλλωστε μεγαλοεταιρίες είναι και πάντα περισσότερος έλεγχος είναι στα δικά τους συμφέροντα.

Δεν ξέρω για εσάς, αλλα εγώ δεν θέλω να αρχίσω να πληρώνω περισσότερα για λιγότερα μόνο και μόνο επειδή οι εταιρίες δεν βρίσκουν λόγο να μην το κάνουν. Δεν θέλω να με αναγκάζει κανείς, έμμεσα, να δω αυτά που πιστεύει οτι θέλω να δω, σύμφωνα με ηλίθια γκάλοπ και “think tanks” και ούτε να είναι ελεύθερος να κατασκοπεύει τις δραστηριότητες μου για να μου προτείνει καλύτερες διαφημίσεις.

Πραγματικά το νέα αυτά μου προκάλεσαν μια μίξη αηδίας και φόβου. Το “Γκιμπσόνιο” μέλλον φαίνεται όλο και κοντινότερο…

ΥΣ: Φαίνεται οτι η κοινότητα στο digg δεν το πολυπιστεύει αλλα δεν ξέρω.. Προτιμώ να το σκεφτώ και να δημιουργηθεί λίγος ντόρος τώρα, παρά να το μετανιώνω μετά.

Found this on the [tag]digg[/tag] and I’m really starting to get tired. So I’m calling BS and FUD

This guy has been posting (trolling) the same thing on every forum under the sun and he has been called on it countless times. He also posted under different aliases and names in order to give credibility and how he has been unmasked.
Only on digg he has posted the same story 3 times, one for each change he made to the article.
Now check this debunk out and notice the comments. Pwnage? I think yes!
People have actually been following him across the internet just to debunk his posts.
I’ve seen this “firefox myths” thingy pop on forums as a sig and had to put a “countersig” in order for the other guy to see the light, it’s like a god damn virus.

Too bad that it already has been dug more than a hundred times, it seems people are desperate to rain on [tag]Firefox[/tag]’s parade and are clutching at straws.

Now I’ll be the first to admit that FF has it’s own share of problems (Insert personal rant about memory hogging) but it is FAR better than IE against spyware and its extensions kick absolute ass. I’m sure I don’t need to go on, there are countless other sites to read about FF.

However it is also free (as in speech) and it gets better by the month if not by the week. It is something that gives me, the user, power to do what I want and not what the developer wants.
For example, if for some reason the mozilla foundation one day decided that firefox should have feature A that a said percentage of users found cumbersome, a new firefox would be able to be created (under another name obviously) that didn’t have it.

Firefox also does not have an agenda as IE has (promote MS Windows due to inability to work in other OS) and it will always be free (as in beer).

Anyone who uses FUD to downplay a product that has these values deserves to be called on it. If on the other hand Firefox was worse than IE, although I admit I would still use it because it is free (as in speech) I would also have no problem for other to criticize it’s existing weaknesses.

Vampirefreak? Moi?

The last few days have been…interesting. Things have been turning up for the better and I couldn’t be any happier.

First a new road opens in my professional career, and just at the right time for my current psyche. You see, I’ve started to get bored and drudgerous which for me isn’t so good. Then as I was thinking of ways to spice up my life, my sisters comes and offers me an option I had previously turned down (at a time where I was happy with the way things stand). This time however it just clicked. Even my sister was taken aback for a while after I said “Great idea!”. She was prepared for a convincing argument and failing that, some good old fashioned name calling.
So I’ve talked to a few people and it seems that within 3 months things will be quite different. We’ll see…

I’ve also registered over at Vampire Freaks (VF Henceforth) which was a result of recent developments in my relationship tab.
However I’m neither a “vampire freak” nor a goth or anything like that. au contraire, I’m actually quite the happy-go-lucky guy with a perpetual smile on my face. I did make an attempt at a melancholy theme (and I even danced a bit at X-cel club this Saturday, just for the kicks) but my registration is mainly just a means to an end.

What I came to understand about VF is that it is a ego-boost galore. The fact that you can see who has rated you makes that the rating system complete off-base. People use it both as a bribe and as a threat. If you dare rate someone with anything other than 10, you’d be sure not to get a 10 yourself (and let’s not even dare contemplate what will happen if you rate them under 7). If someone rates you as a 10 on the other hand, he most likely ask you to rate them a 10 as well as a thanks, in effect throwing all unbiased voting to the wind. That’s why in the end, all the rating you see are over 9.5 even on truly ugly people.

As a result of my VF registration I also took the WoD [tag]test[/tag] and the result amazed me.
I mean, mages ARE my favorite WoD type but I didn’t try to be rated as one. I just answered the questions truthfully and what do you know….

I’ve just been made a SysOp over at Kiwilyrics. Sweet.
The other admins are either missing or too busy so that will allow me to fix some things that have fallen by the wayside.

In case you don’t know it, Kiwilyrics is a lyrics site using the wiki engine. This is especially helpful in the case of lyrics since there are usually a lot of typos and other mistakes. In other sites, if they allow lyrics submitions at all, you have to submit the lyrics to the admins and hope they are allowed soon. If the site sports a quick response time, that usually means that the lyrics are not reviewed at all. Fixing bad submitions is almost impossible, since the responce times are greater still.

The beauty of the wiki is that you have the power to change something immediately and it is also very hard to destroy things. See a mistype as you read a lyrics? Fixing it is only two clicks away.
Missing a song? Submit it yourself immediately. Hell, submit the whole album. Kiwizer makes that braindead easy (although it still has one or two bugs)

Super Scrobbler

Audioscrobbler has finally finished its update and it seems that the default user environment is Last.fm from now on.

The update was supposed to have finished by Monday but eventually, as these things usually do, it finished on Tuesday evening. I Managed to log in briefly at 1:30 am before going to bed and saw the page and skimmed through the new features. ‘Twas a bit slow.
Today I tried logging in again after coming to work but the site had b0rked and I kept getting errors or timeouts, probably the surge of traffic was too great (everyone logging in to see the new thing) and something crashed and burned. It came up after a few hours or so (It seems it was down for ~5 hours) and everything was running almost smoothly ever since. Even my winamp plugin, which couldn’t submit for the last week, managed to finally unload the ~400 songs it had in its cache.

The site layout looks great and is completely based on a scripting language instead of simple html which makes it look very cool. I would like some choice of themes but that can wait for now. It has many new features such as tagging, which is putting keywords on artists, albums or tracks for easy management and search and a personal journal.
The Journal is open but it is supposed to be used for music related things. Its neat feature is that it can link stuff through AS and put them as related terms in a sidebar (with thumbnails), making it easy for anyone reading it to locate them. I’ve already made two entries which you can find here if you so wish. I plan to use the journal as my personal review site so if you find my music taste to your liking you should check it out often.

Tagging is a great idea and I plan to use it heavily to make my collection easy to navigate and manage. Problem is that the profile editor is still a bit buggy and stops saving after using it for a while (it’s been trying to save a new tagset for two hours now ) but it can work in small batches. There is also another way to tag items, by using the tag button from the web page. It lets you easily tag items you are browsing.

I tried the new last.fm player as well. It seems they have turned from the web-based stream to a standalone program that you must install. It’s a nice idea because the web-based was not performing very well (at least for me) but they haven’t implemented proxy authentication which means I still cannot use it from work. I don’t even know if I’ll be able to use it afterward, since I do not know if the port it uses will be open from our firewall. An choice between the player and the web-player would be great at this point since not everyone has administrative rights to their computer (think employees in a company) or may want to use it on multiple computers where installing programs is not always an option.

There are some other nifty things I’ve found out such as a nice Similar Artists sidebar in every artist’s page (I’d like to know how they calculate that), an option to see a complete chart of your listening habits and not just the most popular, enhanced neighbor and friend page where it shows more info (such as their recent journal entries if any) and they even fixed the group charts that weren’t working before.

The forums seems to have been reduced in number now. The classic ones are still there but the plugins seem to have been merged.

All in all I find this a very exciting upgrade. Once the people learn the ropes and fill the place with tags and journals the AS experience will become unparalleled.
Amarok will have many things to implement, especially after the Audioscrobbler page (which is a developer’s repository now) comes up again.

Time to relax or get bored?

Well, my [tag]vacation[/tag] time is finally here and damn if I know what to do with it. I’ve got two full weeks and I really want to get on some kind of vacation but seeing as all my friends are either working, already on vacation or avoiding me, I think that in the end I’ll be left here to rot. The only bright thing in the future is a friend of mine that has volunteered to take me with her on vacation with another friend of hers and another friend of mine that may go to Chalkidiki and may take me with him.
Bah! Couldn’t be vaguer.

It’s my fault in the end I think, I never found friends that were doing this thing and now that I’m looking, it’s too late. I haven’t even managed to find company to go to the beach with, and lets not get on the subject of “friends” that forget you so easily after 6 years. Yes I’m bitter.

In the meantime I’ve been spending my time working on Wikipedia. It’s a noble cause and at least I feel that my time is wasted on something worthy, instead of, for example, games. Currently I’ve been working on Savatage and before that on Blind Guardian, mainly filling in albums or album information. Took me a while but I got them where I like them, now I’m thinking what to move on to next. And to think that all this was inspired by Kiwilyrics ever since I’ve started putting artist links to wikipedia on its pages.

Other than that, boring stuff, I’ve been desperately trying to find some new friends to go out with, and one I did have has gone to the army. It’s sad not to have someone to call isn’t it?
